Keeping Your Little Ones Healthy This Fall

As the leaves change and temperatures drop, November brings cozy sweaters, holiday preparations, and unfortunately, an uptick in seasonal illnesses. At Des Moines Pediatrics, we’re here to help you keep your little ones healthy and happy through the fall season.

Seasonal Illnesses to Watch For:

Fall often brings an increase in cases of colds, flu, and other respiratory infections like RSV. Children are particularly susceptible as they spend more time indoors in close contact with peers.

  • Cold vs. Flu: The flu typically comes on suddenly with a fever, chills, and body aches, while colds are milder with gradual symptoms like a runny nose or cough.
  • RSV Awareness: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common virus among young children. Watch for signs like difficulty breathing, wheezing, or reduced appetite.

The best defense? A strong immune system and preventative care!

Tips to Stay Healthy This Fall:

1. Stay Up to Date on Vaccines

The flu vaccine is recommended for children six months and older. If your child hasn’t received theirs yet, it’s not too late. Schedule an appointment today!

2. Hand Hygiene is Key:

Encourage frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after school or playdates.

3. Boost Their Immune System

Ensure your kids are eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Adequate sleep is just as important—preschoolers need 10–13 hours, while school-aged kids need 9–11 hours nightly.

4. Dress for the Weather:

Layering is essential for fall’s unpredictable temperatures. Keep little ones warm but avoid overheating by dressing in breathable layers.

5. Teach Proper Cough & Sneeze Etiquette:

Teach children to cough or sneeze into their elbows to minimize the spread of germs.

Planning Ahead for the Holidays:

With Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s easy to overlook routine care. However, regular checkups, vaccinations, and timely medical advice can help prevent last-minute health scares during the holiday season.

If you’re traveling, remember to pack any necessary medications, a thermometer, and a small first-aid kit. Let us know if you need additional medical advice for your trip!
